3 Ways To Get More From Your NDIS Plan

Every participant wants to get the most from their NDIS plan. Access to the right funding can mean the difference between meeting your long-term goals or finding yourself even more isolated from the community.

With so many options available to you (as well as all those changing rules), it can be hard to know how to get the most from your NDIS plan. To help you maximise your funding, we’ve put together 3 tips which have been shared among people in our network, to help you along.

Fully utilise your core supports budget

The most flexible funding in your NDIS plan, your core support budget, sometimes goes to waste because you may not understand how you can fully harness it. Core funding can support expenses relating to assistance in daily life, consumables, assistance with social and community participation and transport.

This means core funds can be used for a whole host of purposes, including:

●      Short term accommodation

●      Support workers

●      Therapy sessions

●      Low-cost assistive technology

●      Household cleaning

For instance, you may be able to use your core funding to stay in short term accommodation for a week with support workers to work on specific skills. This could also provide respite to those who care for you.

Think outside the box for capacity building

Capacity building supports are designed to help build independence and skills for everyday life. This funding category covers a range of supports for daily living, therapy, support coordination, social and community participation, employment assistance and improved relationships, learning and life choices.

Unlike your core budget, capacity building funding can’t be moved from one support category to another. However, thinking outside the box when using this funding can help you get more from your plan.

Ways you can better utilise your capacity-building funding include:

●      Hiring a cleaner to keep the house clean while learning how to undertake simple cleaning tasks to boost your skills.

●      Getting a support worker to help you reinforce skills learned in therapy to reduce the need for extra therapy visits.

●      Look for day support providers who can offer extra services to save you time on travel and having to deal with an additional service provider.

Consider self-managing your NDIS plan

Self-managing your NDIS plan may seem overwhelming but there are several reasons why you should consider this option. The first is that self-management gives you access to NDIS registered and unregistered providers, instantly boosting your disability provider options.

When you self-manage, you are in charge of who works with you (and when), because you don’t have to rely on a middle-man provider.

As every plan is different, it’s always best to talk to your support coordinator, planner or LAC to find out how you can get more from your NDIS plan.
